Après le home invasion avec le bon "The Strangers", l'inclassable et bizarre "Mockingbird" et "The Monster", un film de monstre sur fond de drame, le réalisateur nous raconte la semaine en enfer d'un frère et d'une sœur qui rendent visite à leurs parents dans la ferme familiale pour voir le père qui est mourant. Si le lieu est paisible, on ne peut pas en dire autant de leur séjour qui va se transformer en véritable cauchemar. Derrière un rythme assez tranquille se cachent des moments bien angoissants. Bryan Bertino fait en sorte que l'on reste systématiquement sur nos gardes. En termes de frissons, c'est un film plutôt réussi même s'il n'atteint jamais les sommets. Le réalisateur trouve un bon équilibre entre l'ambiance pesante et la violence frontale. Ce qui manque au film, c'est peut-être une histoire plus engageante. On le remarque avec la fin, on dirait que tout est mis en place pour simplement proposer une expérience angoissante à défaut de raconter une véritable histoire. Il est question de la famille, de la difficulté de laisser partir un être aimé, et de deuil, mais ce n'est pas toujours hyper passionnant en plus de manquer de clarté. Si l'on retient que l'aspect épouvante du film, c'est vraiment pas mal et c'est finalement là l'essentiel. Il y a bien longtemps qu'un film de possession ne m'avait pas autant fait flipper. Il faut dire que le genre est un peu passer de mode. Il est loin le temps de L'exorciste ou même de Amityville. Le premier Conjuring était effrayant mais rien d'autres depuis un moment. Comme dans beaucoup d’autres on essaie pas ici de nous expliquer à tout prix l'origine du mal ou du démon. L'angoisse et l'effroi monte progressivement. Quelques scènes choc, d'autres assez gores. C'est mis en scène solidement et bien interprété par un casting inconnu et donc convaincant. Au final, une belle frousse. Dans un coin perdu du Texas une famille entière est décimée, membre après membre, par une entité démoniaque. Reprenant un schéma déjà souvent éprouvé dans le film d'épouvante, Bryan Bertino réussi ici sans esbroufe et avec une économie de moyens remarquable un film tendu de bout en bout que je conseillerai toutefois en priorité aux amateurs du genre. Une œuvre qui fait peur et qui donne envie d'en découvrir d'autres de son auteur. Le cinéma horrifique est un genre qui, sauf de rares exceptions, tourne en rond et ne surprend plus. Avec "The dark and the wicked", le cinéaste Bryan Bertino ne parvient pas à renverser la tendance et nous sort un long métrage aux thèmes, aux ficelles scénaristiques et aux effets horrifiques complétement éculés. L'efficacité du film en prend donc un coup malgré quelques scènes sympathiques. Rien ne distingue " The dark and the wicked" de la masse et ce manque d'imagination, cette accumulation de clichés finissent par lasser. Après une longue période d'absence, Louise et Michael reviennent dans la ferme familiale pour assister leur mère au chevet de leur père mourant. Sur les lieux, ils sont témoins d'événements étranges qui semblent persécuter leurs parents...On le saisit assez vite grâce au climat quasiment putride que Bryan Bertino distille à l'écran, le malheur ne se limite pas seulement à la condition de ce père malade, il s'est aussi propagé pour contaminer l'ensemble de cette ferme et tout ce qui est susceptible de la sortir de son isolement. D'ailleurs, la première chose que la mère dit à ses enfants c'est qu'ils n'auraient jamais dû revenir. Si ces paroles sonnent d'abord comme un avertissement pour les protéger, elles signifient surtout le fait que Louise et Michael n'ont tout simplement plus leur place dans la demeure de leurs parents. Ils sont partis depuis trop longtemps, ils ont volontairement abandonné leurs aînés à leur triste sort pour se consacrer de manière égoïste à leurs propres existences. Les deux enfants ont beau essayé de raviver artificiellement un peu de chaleur par des gestes maladroits, le lien affectif qui unissait cette famille s'est rompu avec leur absence et a laissé place à des silhouettes désincarnées qui interagissent sous le même toit sans se comprendre. Ce gouffre perceptible entre eux a permis de laisser le champ libre à une entité, du moins, quelque chose qui se nourrissait jusqu'à présent de l'infinie tristesse de ces personnes âgées délaissées mais qui, aujourd'hui, salive à l'idée de s'amuser avec le poids de la culpabilité de leurs enfants...On peut dire que Bryan Bertino joue un peu de malchance avec un quatrième long-métrage s'aventurant sur des thématiques très similaires à "Relic" sorti il y a à peine quelques sûr, l'approche entre les deux films n'est pas totalement la même Bertino préfère visiblement s'appuyer sur la dimension dramatique/psychologique de son intrigue pour privilégier les séquences d'épouvante à l'écran là où le film de Natalie Erika James adoptait une démarche quasiment inverse l'incarnation du mal y était par exemple à une strate bien plus symbolique, et "The Dark and the Wicked" se concentre en outre surtout sur les remords des enfants, véritables héros du long-métrage passé sa première partie, quand "Relic" construisait son propos autour de plusieurs générations. Toutefois, dans l'ensemble, force est de constater que la comparaison entre les deux films joue en défaveur de celui de Bryan Bertino qui se montre beaucoup moins subtil pour exposer les états d'âmes de Louise et Michael et nous faire comprendre la portée métaphorique de toute son histoire, la faute en grande partie à une écriture qui cherche en permanence à marteler leur mal-être à travers des dialogues si explicites sur le sujet qu'ils en deviennent faciles ou caricaturaux. On ne peut que le regretter car "The Dark and The Wicked" a malgré tout quelques belles idées pour mettre en valeur la véritable nature de la souffrance qui habite ses personnages le point commun dans la manière qu'ils ont de trépasser est sans doute la meilleure sans trop en dire mais il semble souvent s'y arrêter pour seulement les décliner, sans avoir autre chose de mieux à si, en cherchant avant tout à faire ressortir l'effroi dans son récit, Bryan Bertino multiplie de façon exponentielle les manifestations étranges au fil des jours/chapitres du film qui s'égrènent. En bon artisan du genre, le réalisateur parvient même à composer quelques passages inquiétants très efficaces dans cette lenteur ambiante qui scie à ravir aux boulets de désespoir traînés par ses héros les manipulations perverses dont ils sont les victimes les conduisent souvent à des extrémités tout aussi cruelles. Cependant, si les outils horrifiques sur le devant de la scène sont utilisés avec une vraie dextérité par Bryan Bertino, on ne peut pas dire qu'ils soient hélas toujours inventifs, l'imagerie ou les ressorts convoqués en ce sens nous renvoyant sans cesse à d'autres longs-métrages passés avant lui. Bref, même sur ce point qu'il privilégie, "The Dark and The Wicked" ne propose pas grand chose d'inédit à se mettre sous le dent...Bien sûr, si vous n'avez pas vu "Relic" ou si l'angle choisi par Bryan Bertino vous séduit plus que celui du film de Natalie Erika James, "The Dark and the Wicked" a beaucoup de chances de vous plaire ! On ne vous en voudra pas, ce nouveau long-métrage de l'auteur de "The Strangers" a clairement des qualités qui, on l'espère, ont été évoquées par cette chronique. Mais, dans le cas contraire, il est fort probable que vous sortiez de ce séjour infernal à la ferme avec le sentiment qu'un premier film australien vous a déjà récemment proposé bien mieux sur un sujet similaire... Pas besoin de jump scare pour instiller l'angoisse! Ces 2 pauvres parents longtemps oubliés par leurs enfants sont résignés sous l'emprise d'une force maléfique qui les étouffe...On ne la verra pas cette force, mais elle se manifeste par des auto-mutilations voire +, inévitables. La photographie est magnifique!La tension est sinusoïdale en passant par des hauts et des lenteurs...La fin est dramatique, car la possession est contagieuse... The Dark and the Wicked ne cesse de se figer, persuadé que quelque chose va naître à l’écran, sortir du rien pour peser sur le plan, perturber la lumière, faire grincer le parquet ou bêler les chèvres. Erreur, rien ne se passe, et le réalisateur, comme rattrapé par l’inertie de son geste, se dit qu’il faut remplir, surprendre, usant du jump scare et abusant de la menace en arrière-plan qui fixe le spectateur avant de disparaître quand vient le plan suivant. Une vieille femme nue, un vieil homme alimenté par tube, une biquette à trois pattes qui clopine jusqu’à rejoindre son maître qui lui brise le cou et la brûle avec ses camarades d’étable. Se déploie pendant plus d’une heure et demie une léthargie horrifique qui n’est pas sans rappeler le style d’un Ari Aster. Car le film n’atteint jamais le malaise poisseux de The Witch Robert Eggers, 2015 ni même la peinture familiale de la vanité humaine que l’on retrouvait, il y a peu, dans Relic Natalie Erika James, 2020 l’écriture des personnages s’avère des plus caricaturales et empêche le spectateur de s’attacher à eux, leurs enjeux étant à l’image de leur fixité ridicule devant un troupeau décimé qui gît dans la clairière. Quant à la puissance symbolique de l’intrigue, elle peine à emporter l’adhésion et semble davantage prétexte à une accumulation de courtes séquences dérangeantes ou voulues ainsi, que n’engendrent qu’un long et profond sentiment de lassitude. Bryan Bertino confirme son désir de noircir davantage sa filmographie et commence sans doute à tendre vers l’équilibre qu’il recherchait. Il ne semblait que dériver depuis son premier long-métrage qui lui tenait à cœur et il revient alors dans la continuité de ce qui l’avait fasciné dans son The Strangers », à savoir le home invasion. Face à la situation sanitaire et très particulière d’un père, le reste des membres de la famille trouve encore la force de s’éloigner les uns des autres. Il suffira d’un bon élan de courtoisie pour que celle-ci se révèle toute aussi terrifiante que nuancée. Les personnages sont présents pour le saisir de nouveaux, mais en vain, car au bout de ces sept jours de deuil, la vérité va trancher. Entre une mère qui sombre dans la dépression et ses chèvres dans la folie, les ténèbres se distillent dans chaque recoin et finalement dans un hors cadre que l’on sollicite bien plus que les jump scare à gogo que l’on anticipe tant. Ce film trébuche quelques fois sur ce point, mais essentiellement dans sa narration, trop linéaire et qui recycle un peu trop ses effets de style. En revanche, il focalise toute notre attention sur sa pertinence psychologique, nous donnant l’occasion de nous familiariser avec le langage de l’ choses qui n’expliquent pas tout renouent avec l’intrusion dans l’intimité d’une famille qui doit revoir son point de vue, vis-à-vis de la mort elle-même. Ce qui est malignement réussi en témoigne, à l’image de dialogues en léger décalage avec la situation. Que le diable s’invite à travers des hôtes plus ou moins symboliques instaure un climat bien étrange, que les amateurs du genre ne manqueront pas de s’en délecter. Cependant, au-delà de ces tentatives tantôt gagnantes, tantôt lassante, c’est bien dans le drame familial qu’on économise toute cette intensité. Un manque de communication consternant nous ramène à ces moments forts d’une vie, presque antérieure, où frère et sœur opposent inconsciemment leur croyance et leur obligation. Il est évident que la famille passe avant toute chose, mais ce que rapporte les ultimes minutes ce cette intrigue nous invite à justement relativiser nos émotions les plus détour d’une semaine très subversive, on a démontré que The Dark and the Wicked » constitue peut-être un point de rupture avec ce que Bertino avait l’habitude de créer. Ce refoulement de sa terre natale nous laisse ainsi songeur. En affutant le deuxième côté de sa lame, tout finit par devenir plus tranchant. Il reste plus qu’à la destinée au meilleur de maniement et à la meilleure cible, afin de rendre le séjour plus suffocant. Mais s’il ne s’agissait que d’invoquer les frissons pour séduire, cela ne suffirait pas à rendre cette œuvre aussi attachante. La famille Strakers se dilue dans une normalité que l’on pousse dans ses retranchements. L’enjeu principal d’une telle manœuvre consiste ainsi à jauger la combattivité de chacun à rendre sa famille plus forte et unie. Mais comme dans la plupart des infrastructures, quelques clous dépassent, gênant ainsi sa croissance et ses valeurs. Du très très bon...Le film a un rythme très intense qui débute assez vite, et qui ne retombe pas jusqu'aux dernières secondes de l'enregistrement !Le jeu d'acteur est bon, la réalisation excellente, rendant ce film qui pourrait presque être un huis clos incroyablement vous aimez le véritable fantastique-épouvante, vous allez être ravi. L'aspect psychologique de l'ensemble est sans doute la cerise sur le gâteau. On se retrouve vraiment transporté dans cette semaine glauque et malsaine que vivent cette sœur et son frère. Et merci au scénariste de ne pas terminer cette histoire par un twist pourri avec un pseudo nom de démon. Mon seul regret est les 5 dernières secondes du film qui n'étaient pas franchement utiles. Un film qui renouvel pas le genre , malgré quelques scènes plutôt efficaces où l'on reste sur nos gardes pour ne pas sursauter , le scénario reste un bien piètre trou béant où l'on tourne en rond tel une baignoire que l'on vide ... ce n'est pas du tout le film qui restera dans les mémoires du film horrifique. Belle ambiance, chouette photographie, le film prend son temps et le contexte est merveilleusement bien utilisé. Il y a cependant qu'on s'ennuie beaucoup, que le film préfère user d'effets un peu éculés jumpscare/portes qui s'ouvrent toutes seules/parquet qui grince plutôt que de créer un véritable suspens par la narration et s'enlise paresseusement dans le même schéma tout du long découverte d'un élément troublant puis apparition de la "chose". Du reste, le film se traîne difficilement derrière les "The Witch", "Héréditary" et autres "Relic" tout en restant supérieure aux productions horrifique plus grand public. on va dire que je ne suis jamais content,mais je dois dire que je suis pas mal ennuyé devant ce film que j'ai toutefois regardé jusqu'au bout,,esperant un rebondisement final!et bien non,c'est deseperement long...1 h30 qui en parait le double!
